Haily's cake cont.....

So tonight I will be constructing Haily's cake. I am actually really excited about this cake... I am forever wanting things to look symmetric and I love making patterns and that is what this cake is all about. I also made a bow the night before last that my lovely honey will airbrush for me today!! Hopefully that will fit nicely on top of this cake... along with some curly wired balls coming out of the top per the birthday girls request! :) Wow what I wouldn't have given to be able to have a birthday cake like this for my 11th birthday... oh and I thought I would share the drawing Halily made to show me what she wanted on the top of her cake.....
Isn't that the cutest thing...... Ladies and Gentleman we have a future cake decorator on our hands here............. I love it!

Hailey's Cake

I am making a cake for an old friends' daughter. This will be my first project to post on this blog from the beginning and I am so excited. First of all let me warn you that I am not an artist and I cannot spell..... (I may have forgotten to mention that before... just in case I forget to use spell check.. don't hold it against me) So below you will find a rough sketch of the cake I will make this week. I am really excited about the patterns and colors of this cake and the fact that I actually made a sketch so I .. well and everyone who reads this blog can see this cake literally come to life! Stay tuned to see the transformation............

Below this and to the side of my posts you will find all the cakes I have made to date. My first one being made during the week end of February 16th 2009. Birthday Cakes.... two for two

This is a small double decker birthday cake I made for a co-workers son. I was yellow and chocolate cake with butter cream. I kinda think it had a bit of a retro look.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a small double decker birthday cake I made. It was strawberry and white cake with strawberry filling. I liked doing the all black with the silver accents... just wish I already had my air gun so I could have airbrushed this cake to make it shine.
The Search Cake
This was a very simple double decker cake I made for Search graduation party. It is made of black walnut cake with buttercream filling. The hardest part of this cake was the hat made of gum paste. I have the hardest time with gum paste drying in my house..... ther must be a lot of humidity in here. Thanks to my honey again for carving the letters for this cake. We also made a small one layer side cake to help feed all the people of this party.
The Bowler Hat
This is a 4 inch mini chocolate and pineapple butter cream cake with a yellow butter cream rose. After taking the fondant class.. I realized that making cakes by myself could prove a little bit challenging so my better half, the love of my life, decided to take a beginning butter cream class with me. This is the result of his hard work! I think he did an amazing job, and I am lucky enough to have someone love me and stand by me and my hobby and help me tremendously.... i could not make these wonderful cakes without him.
This lovely creation here is my first attempt at a small 4 inch butter cream cake. Made of chocolate and pineapple like the one Aaron made. It looks a little spastic because I was trying to use all the techniques and create all the flowers I learned to do with butter cream. I never thought I could make a cake so smooth!
The Green Cake
After my 40 hour date with fondant I decided to go out with gum paste... A month later I took a 40 hour gum paste flower class at The Cake Craft Shoppe. This was by far a lot more fun that the fondant and I just fell in love with the flowers. I had a birthday cake to make at the end of this weeks classes and she loved the color green... so I decided to make all my flowers green.... At first it was funny and everyone in class was staring as they made beautiful flowers in pinks, purples, reds, and yellows... and everything on my desk was a different shade of green. I loved making the rose and the carnation eventhough they have to me made in many stages and they take a couple of days to make. So below is the finished birthday cake for Monina.... I dubbed this one The Green Cake.
Back to the Beginning---- creative outlet
So going to way back when... I have always been a little creative. I have all these creative ideas but I could never find an outlet. One day while watching Ace of Cakes I think to myself.... "I can do this..I can make these cakes" So I started looking up places that I could learn this craft. There are only so many things on youtube and on the Internet and that's when I came across a golden egg called The Cake Craft Shoppe. I found a professional fondant class and decided to give it a try. Little did I know that I was getting myself into more than I actually knew. After 40 hours and a ton of new ideas and utensils later I had created 5 cakes. Not the best you have ever seen but non the less I personally thought I had a bit of a skill. I had finally found my creative outlet.
This was the second cake I made.. it is a styrofoam dummy cake that I covered in chocolate fondant. It was not easy and to be honest the first bouts I had with fondant... well lets just say I thought the fondant won! lol These are the first flowers I made though and well the flowers are what hooked me. I decided to keep battling the fondant just so I could accent it with beautiful hand made sugar flowers. I used two different shades of yellow and pink to make these simple flowers.
The day after I made the above dummy cake we made this cake. This is my actual FIRST REAL cake that I covered with fondant... and let me tell you just like before I was soooo scared! A procrastinating perfectionist at heart this fondant made me so nervous. This cake was actually covered in two pieces one long strip that I rolled over with a basket weave rolling pin and then attached around the cake in one piece. Then the top square was placed on top and the edges were crimped together with a crimper. The flowers like before were the best part for me. They were made of colored gum paste and painted with luster dust. Each side of the cake was a different color. Oh and the cake inside was lemon....... yum yum... my favorite flavor cake so far.
The butterflies and the Letter D are made of gum paste. There was chocolate fondant on the base below the cake. I hope Denise liked the cake.
Julie and Julia Saturday 8/15/09
Tonight we went to see Julie & Julia with our friends. A great light hearted movie and I just loved the humor in it. So as an inspiration I thought I would start a blog about my cakes. I know its kinda of cheezy but oh well I am always looking for new things to to adventure in.
So I am going to try to write in this blog everytime I make a cake. I just finished making my very first wedding cake! It was so amazing and stressful at the same time. I am just learning how to make these beautiful cakes so I am so nervous that they will not turn out, then when the cake is completed it is so magical.
Hopefully I will be able to make two birthday cakes next week. One for my friend Denise and one for my sister. We will see how it goes. Oh and I hope I remember to keep blogging. :)
